Frequently Asked Questions

What is forest school?

At Misitu we believe that regular, long-term access to woodland and natural environments provides children with inspirational and challenging outdoor learning opportunities. The activities on offer are varied and child-led including free play and exploration, in addition to den building, using knots, art and crafts with natural materials, gadgets, identification of species and surveys in the woodland, fire-lighting and using tools.

The exciting and challenging activities that children can participate in are risk assessed and supervised by a qualified Forest school leader. Participants who come to the woods with the Misitu will be given the opportunity to develop their curiosity, confidence, self-esteem, creativity, empathy, communication skills, knowledge of the natural environment and ability to assess and mitigate risk. Children will be able to choose which activities to participate in and suggest activities for future sessions.

The Forest School Association consider forest school to have six principles:

1) Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.
2) Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
3) Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
4) Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
5) Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
6) Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning.

Who can participate in Misitu  forest school sessions?

We provide sessions for children of various ages. Please see the list of forest school activities for more information.

In addition, we offer activities at discounted rates for Scout and Girlguide groups.

Please contact us if you are interested in something that is not listed and we will see if we can help.

What clothing should my child wear for sessions?

Forest school sessions take place outdoors in all weathers so please use clothing and footwear that is suitable for being outdoors. In the event of rain tarpaulins may be used to provide some shelter during the session.

Please wear layers of clothes to ensure warmth and sturdy footwear with good grip. Bring a waterproof coat for all sessions and waterproof trousers are useful in wet weather.

What is included within the cost of Misitu forest school sessions?

Participants just need to bring themselves in appropriate clothing, a water bottle and their enthusiasm to sessions! We will provide the rest.

There are details about the duration of sessions and food and drink provided for each type of Misitu forest school session when booking.

We have public liability insurance.

What should I do if my child has COVID-19 symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19?

Please can you / your child stay at home if you test positive for COVID-19 or if you have symptoms of possible COVID-19 including a fever, sore throat, new cough, change in taste or smell or cold symptoms.

We will work with you to rebook any sessions that you have to miss due to COVID-19 symptoms or testing positive, as long as you let us know prior to the start of the session(s) that you need to miss. Sometimes we may not be able to offer another session immediately, but we will do our best to fit you in at a convenient time as soon as possible.

What happens at a Misitu birthday party?

All parties include a woodland activity and campfire run by a qualified forest school leader. There will also be time to play and we don’t mind if some of the participants prefer to play in the woodland rather than take part in the organised activity! The forest school leader will bring a selection of equipment so that children can follow their interests, e.g. lying in a hammock, creating in a mud kitchen or hunting for bugs.

We provide a drink, a snack cooked on the campfire and party bags for the number of participants that you have specified. You can choose a woodland activity from the options listed on the website. Just bring along your own birthday cake.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements if none of the options on the website are quite right for your party.
